
History - What we have so far
The current building is on the site of the priory of Saint Thomas a Becket, formed in 1199 ad. A historic site, dating back to the middle ages, a place of significant religious importance. it has been the home and stopping place for the Knights Hospitaliers & The Knights of St James. It was famed for is 13th Century Prior "Giullaume le Gros" who's position of Religious authority was renowned from Cherbourg, down through Coustance and across to Avranches and Le Mont St Michelle. The existing building began construction in 1736 and its top stone bears an inscription date of 1761.
Reading information on church documents it is clear that the Priory at La Bloutiere was of great standing. Reference is regularly made in the form of " Cherbourg and La Bloutiere" placing them on par in the region.
